Fish Production
Hatchery
The Espadon Marine hatchery in Hermanus produced 400 000 fingerlings each year. The new hatchery in East London aims to produce 1.2 million good quality dusky kob fingerlings per year. Weaned juveniles are ready to be transferred to grow-out facilities after approximately 9 weeks. Espadon Marine has been pioneering marine finfish aquaculture in southern Africa and was the first facility to successfully spawn and raise dusky kob. Espadon Marine puts a lot of focus on biosecurity protocols and has a health monitoring program in place. It is of utmost importance to ensure that all fish produced in the hatchery are healthy.
On growing
Fish are on-grown at our East London farm to a size of approximately 1kg over a period of about 12 months. The current grow-out farm aims to produce 300 tons of dusky kob per year using partial recirculating technology. Espadon Marine aims to gradually increase the on-growing production to 1000 tons per year by 2012. The technology used by Espadon Marine produces little waste and has minimal impact on the coastal environment. Minimising the effect of our farming efforts on the environment is key to the core philosophy of Espadon Marine.
In addition to supplying our own farms, available juveniles can be sold to other finfish aquaculture businesses who have their necessary permits in place to on-grow dusky kob. Contact us if you need more information regarding fingerling sales.
