Espadon Marine Aquaculture Research

Aquaculture Research

At Espadon Marine we believe in moving forward and developing interesting and exciting new species in aquaculture.

The hatchery has successfully spawned red roman (Chrysoblephus laticeps), yellowtail (Seriola lalandii) and white steenbras (Lithognathos lithognathos) on a research scale. The focus of our efforts have been placed upon developing the commercial spawning and rearing protocols for dusky kob (Argyrosomas japonicus).

We have taken a proactive view in tweaking common culture techniques and have conducted many in-house experiments to improve our knowledge of this species and aquaculture in general.

In the near future we will start intensive work on developing the techniques and methods for culturing yellowtail (Seriola lalandii) and Cape salmon (Atractoscion aequidens) as well as various other endemic marine species.

As a company we have been involved in numerous research projects at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Most of the research has been conducted in collaboration with the Department of Ichthyology & Fisheries Science, Rhodes University as well as with Marine and Coastal Management, Two Oceans Aquarium and the Department of Science and Technology.
